Bible Study Rules
- The Holy Spirit is our teacher.
- All revelation concerning Gods written word is found in the scripture.
- All questions for the sake of salvation are welcome.
Let’ Recap what was taught in part 1. If you haven’t listened to part 1, I would suggest listing to it first before continuing.
To have the Holy Spirit one must desire to have the Spirit of God around them. Eventually over time the Holy Spirit will dwell in you. However, we know to hear consistently from the Holy Spirit it begins with understanding, and you cannot live a Christian life without the fear of God in you, all the days of your life here on earth.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
We know that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom and this knowledge found in God’s holy ones, his saints, the ones called out of the world, they understand this. They do not have mere human understanding to know, or to do. but their understanding concerning having the fear of God in them comes by faith found in Jesus Christ.
When I speak about fearing God it has nothing to do with being afraid or terrified of him.
To fear God is to have absolute reverence and awe for an Almighty God, the Creator of all things. In the Bible we get a few glimpses into heaven, and we see the heavenly creatures worship Him around His throne continually, crying out “Holy, holy, holy!” and covering their faces. This Almighty God has called us by our name to serve Him, and He has worked out a way that we will be saved to be with Him for eternity. This should cause an inexpressible love and gratitude and reverence to grow and increase in our hearts!
This gives us a hatred towards sin, and because we love Him, we will not sin against Him. Remember we want nothing else in this world than to be pleasing to Him, and to bring honor to His name. We fear to cause Him sorrow or grief, knowing how incredibly wretched sin is, how much God hates it, and how much it hurts Him when we sin.
Psalm 89:7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, And to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
Question: What does it mean to fear God?
Proverbs 8:13. “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.”
In the scriptures we see it consistently teaches us about renewing our mind. Have you ever wondered why? and what did Jesus meant by it is finished? In the book of Genesis, we see the type of mind God wants us to have.
Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
The mind God wants us to have is a mind that resist the tree of good and evil in this case the devil. The saints of God are in the world of Satan, for a reason. We do not belong in the world of Satan even though we are among them. In John 17:15-16 Jesus prayed. “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world”
Those that are in the world, even today still suffer because they continually eat, partake, or seek advice from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Even some saints who find themselves lukewarm in Christ are unknowingly or knowingly doing the same as those that are in the world. They have lost the fear of God in them.
In Genesis 2:17 it says “: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” In the scripture there is recorded three types of deaths.
- Spiritual death separation of the individual from God
(This death can be temporary unless that person repents)
- The physical death separation of body and spirit
- Eternal death the final estate of the lost person in the “lake of fire”
(Revelation 20:10,14 termed this as the second death, the separation from God forever.)
Its important to know that there are people today still eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and if they continue, they will qualify for the second death by the lake of fire, separation from God forever. Why? because there is no fear of God in them.
Jesus said in the book of Matthew we should recognized these types of trees by their fruit.
Matthew 7:19 19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Anyone that does not have the fear of God in them has the knowledge of good and evil, and this is the fruit they will bring forth. They will know of good but cannot help but do evil. I will say it again. Anyone that does not have the fear of God in them has the knowledge of good and evil and this is the fruit they will bring forth. They will know of good but cannot help but do evil.
In the book of Romans, it gives us a clear picture of this
Romans 7:19 (NLT) I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.
The King James version says it this way. “For the good that I would I do not. but the evil which I would not, that I do.”
This is why the scripture speaks about renewing our minds. And it begins with having the fear of God in us.
Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
When you conformed yourself to be as those in the world of Satan, the fear of God will eventually leave you without you even realizing it. In it’s place you will reverence yourself, it’s arrogance, it’s called pride. You will be ready and willing to fulfill your own acceptable and perfect will. You have just died and didn’t know it. it’s a Spiritual death, separation from God while you are alive on the earth. In other words, the Holy Spirit will not be able to communicate with you anymore. Why? because you know of good but cannot help but to do evil.
When we have the fear of God the Holy Spirit will guide us into dealing with the issues of life. We do not have any other wisdom; we cannot use worldly wisdom to deal with things. We can only use the word of God and the understanding of the word of God comes by the Holy Spirit. It’s important. Lets turn to the scriptures to get a clearer understanding of this
1 Samuel 15:10 10 Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, 11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.
The Lord told Samuel this and Samuel cried and it grieved him all night. Samuel was hurt Let’s look at verse 12.
12And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal. 13And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.
14And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
You see while Saul was professing, I am performed the commandment of the Lord, Samuel heard sounds of sheep in the background. Samuel was like “so what’s the meaning of that?”
I want you to understand something here, it’s very vital. You see Saul hardly saw his errors. I want you to understand that somebody like this he cannot blame himself. They would say something like this “ They didn’t tell us early.” The reason for them not doing what they was supposed to do, has to be somebody else. Its never them
Look at Saul, Samuel said “What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? And Saul said in verse 15
15They have brought them from the Amalekites:
Saul didn’t say we, have brought them. He said They.
15And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed
Did you hear what Saul said. He said “THEY”. have brought them the sacrifice to the Lord.
16Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. 17And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight,
That’s what I am thinking about some of you here now. You’re playing with your office, your playing with the instructions given to you by God, your playing with the assignment given to you. But when you first became born again or made a minister of God even after God has delivered you. It was so important to you, you honored it, you revered It because you were little in your eyes.
Now you have become too big. Now you cannot be instructed, now you cannot be corrected, now you have become so big you can now decide whether or not to do it. Whether or not to do what God told you to do with the ministry your in. whether or not if you should pickup your bible and read it. I don’t feel like praying right now, I don’t need to take notes during bible study then apply what God has taught me. Don’t you all know that God is not mocked that whatsoever you sow that you will reap.
If you sow actions lacking the reverence of God in your life. You will reap demons into your life, and they will eat your lunch then pop the bag. Don’t ever become too big for God or for His instructions.
1 Samuel 15:17 17And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? 18And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed. 19Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?
In verse 20 it’s so painful, look at what Saul replied.
20And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed…
It’s so painful when a man can no longer see his errors. He has become so blind he couldn’t see. I remember Samson when he was taken away by the philistines and taken into the prison house that first thing, they did was to remove his eyes. When you are no longer acting with God, when the fear of God is no longer in you and the Spirit of God departs from you the first thing that the enemy does is to remove your eyes, now you cannot see anymore. Saul lost his sight. He couldn’t see anymore.
Every time you are in the wrong place you will lose your sight. Now hear is the man Saul unaware he has lost fear of God in him, has lost his sight also, he cannot see that he has done anything wrong. “ah but I came!!, Ah I have obeyed” he cannot see his error. He said, “but I have obeyed” and it’s obvious to everybody that he didn’t. The instructions were clear but without the fear of God who can receive instructions.
I pray to God, and I pray to God often I do not want to become a professional I want to be a Christian. I don’t even want to become a professional preacher. It’s easy to become a professional, you will know the Christian behavior, You will know the Christian prayer; the Christian worship and leadership you will know all those things. You may even see result and win souls, but don’t deceive yourself.
If the Word of God cannot dominate your Spirit. If the fear of God cannot bring that humility in your Spirit you have lost your sight. In Revelation 3:1 God said, “I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.” God is saying I know you have a name that you are alive, I know you believe everything is alright, you think everything is fine, but what you have is dead. Why? because there is no fear of God in you no more.
There is something about the word of God, it should be more than a miracle worker, it should be more than a preacher, it should produce humility in you and humility has nothing to do with tears or crying. Having the fear of God will produce in you a faithful spirit. We are talking about Godly reverence that would make you say the right words, there will be words that cannot come out of your mouth, insultive word cannot come out your mouth. You become so humbled it doesn’t matter who is leading any meeting you’ll be there, because you see the spirit of the Lord in that place.
20And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. 22And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
When you have the fear of God, your attitude matter. When the Holy Spirit comes to correct you listen and do. or have you become a prisoner. Do not allow yourself to become a prisoner because of the opinion of others. When you are corrected by the Holy Spirit telling you “You have the fear of God in you, do you think God will approve of such things”. Have the right attitude do not reject the correction.
But look at this man, called Saul in verse 24
24And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
Saul said he feared the people. Jesus said in John 5:44 those that are concerned with the honor of men cannot believing God. They cannot obey, they cannot act upon the word of God because they seek the honor of men. If you seek men honor you will not fully obey the words of God.
When you are about to do an act that is against God, and the Holy Spirit comes to remind you about having the fear of God in you then you must not do it because you love God. If then and there you find it difficult to listen because your emotions are high, then you start thinking. If I go back and speak to that person and ask for forgiveness, they may think I am weak. Why would anyone think this way? It’s because they are concern about what others think about them. They have lost their sight.
Bothers and sisters it’s only the honor that comes from God that is worth it.
When Saul finally realized what he had done look what he said in verse 25
25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. 26And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. 27And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. 28And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. 29And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. 30Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people,
You see the elders where there, seeing all of this, but Saul now has painted himself to be somebody big. When Samuel first arrived remember Saul said “I have obeyed the word the Lord” in front of all the elders. Now that he is rejected, he cares for the people. Saul was like “Please Samuel honor me before my elders please please” he was concerned.
You see Samuel was smart. In the next chapter tells us that Saul had now become a wicked man, because when the Lord turns away from a man, he cannot have the right Spirit anymore. In the next chapter you will find that when the Lord asked Samuel to anoint a man in the house of Jesse. He said to the Lord “if Saul gets to know that I am in town he will kill me.” why would Samuel think that way? Its because he knew the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul.
In closing, let us reflect as to who was this, Saul. Saul thought his good deeds would substitute for having the fear of God in him. He hardly saw his own error, instead he argued with Samuel insisting he had obeyed. Eventually when he had accepted that something was wrong. What did he do? He blamed others for it. He lost his sight.
The only way you can hear from the Holy Spirit continually is by fearing God because you love him. When we fear God, the Holy Spirit will renew your mind to become like him. You will be taught the true understanding of the knowledge of good and evil. You would know about evil but cannot help but to do good. I will repeat myself.
When we fear God, the Holy Spirit will renew your mind to become like him. You will be taught the true understanding of the knowledge of good and evil. You would know about evil but cannot help but to do good.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Glory to God!!
