One of the questions people ask the most is, “How do I hear the Holy Spirit?” They think there must be a magic formula involved—and while there isn’t a 1-2-3 magic formula, there are disciplines that you can implement to put yourself in the place of hearing the Holy Spirit more clearly.
Question: Do you know what God is always doing?
Answer: Talking
He is always speaking using words. Reminding his children as to who they are. it’s just a matter of operating in the spirit to hear Him.
To encourage the Holy Spirit to be around you we must decide I am going to encourage the Holy Spirit to be around me. This might sound kind of weird, but you will be amazed this first step is the beginning to humility.
Matthew 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
So, by making up your mind saying, I am going to encourage the Holy Spirit to be around me. You are confessing to God saying, “Father I am going to become your Child just as you said I am.” Do you Remember the story of the prodigal son? In the parable of the prodigal son, it shows the nature of repentance, and God’s readiness to welcome and bless all who return to him.
We are all called Children of God, however there are some of God’s Children that are coming back home. This is done by first deciding “I am going to encourage the Holy Spirit to be around me”
Question: Do you have to be Holy to have the Holy Spirit around you?
Answer: No! that’s religious outward practice. it’s the Holy Spirit that makes us Holy.
It’s like a Child saying, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25
So now that you have decided that you are going to encourage the Holy Spirit to be around you.
Question: How do we do it?
Well, God is so gracious he knew we would ask that question so be place the answer in the scriptures.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
It says the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. This is the beginning before we do anything. And it continues to say the knowledge of the holy is understanding. God is telling us that the knowledge of the one that is holy is understanding, and that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. I will say it again. Listen closely. “God is telling us that the knowledge of the one that is holy is understanding, and that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”
Remember the topic of today’s bible study is How do you hear from the Holy Spirit. We have learnt that the first thing we must is to decide to encourage the Holy Spirit to be around us. We also know that you do not have to be holy to begin this process and it’s the Holy Spirit’s job to make us Holy.
Do not allow the devil to deceive you into thinking that someone like you cannot encourage no Holy Spirit to be around you because of your sinful past.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
When you decide to walk after the Spirit, God will not condemn you; in fact, Jesus confirms this.
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Therefore, to encourage to Holy Spirit to be around you, we have gained the understanding in Proverbs 9:10. “that the knowledge of the one that is holy is understanding. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom”. When we see the word wisdom, it means understanding.
Let’s take this step by step
- The knowledge of God’s holy one is understanding
- The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom which is understanding.
So, if the fear of the LORD is the beginning of understanding and the knowledge of God’s holy ones which are his children has understanding therefore, we must ask two questions
- What does it mean to fear God?
- What is this understanding his children the holy one’s possess?
To fear God is absolute reverence and awe for an Almighty God, the Creator of all things. In the Bible we get a few glimpses into heaven, and we see the heavenly creatures worship Him around His throne continually, crying out “Holy, holy, holy!” and covering their faces. This Almighty God has called us by our name to serve Him, and He has worked out a way that we will be saved to be with Him for eternity. This should cause an inexpressible love and gratitude and reverence to grow and increase in our hearts!
This causes us to fear to sin against Him, because we want nothing else in this world than to be pleasing to Him, and to bring honor to His name. We fear to cause Him sorrow or grief, knowing how incredibly wretched sin is, how much God hates it, and how much it hurts Him when we sin.
Proverbs 8:13. “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.”
Question: How do we in our day to day lives exercise this love towards God and fear him?
Well, we know in Proverbs 8:13. It says, “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.” Therefore, the next time you’re about to speak negatively towards anyone. Think about the fear of God and the love you have for him. Ask yourself “Would God approve of such things coming out of my mouth?
The next time Satan words enter your mind to desire another person that do not belong to you. Say to your self because I love God, I will no longer tolerate such desires because its against him. You see by remembering you love God and exercising your love towards him you will 100 percent be encouraging the Holy Spirit to be around you.
Question: Can anyone give me other ways we can show our love to God and fear him?
- Listening to Gospel Music and Worshiping him
- To fear to act against His will.
Question: What is the fastest way to know God’s Will?
Answer: Read the scriptures consciously with thought. Not blindly for the sake of just doing it to be right with God that’s called religion and religion has no place with God.
Matthew 15:8-9 8This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
When we pick up the bible let us first pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you into all understanding to teach you and give you the grace to remember what you have learnt.

- The second step is. We must also know that the knowledge of the God’s holy one is understanding
Question: Who is God’s holy one’s?
Answer: Those that have accepted Jesus into their lives. The saints of Christ, God called ones
Question: What do you think is the knowledge of God’s holy one understanding is? In other words what do they understand about fearing God?
Here are some of the things God’s holy ones understand
- To have the proper reverence and awe for Him because we love Him, we do whatever is required of us to serve Him.
Psalm 89:7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, And to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
This is what the saints of God his holy one’s live by and understand. We love God, and by loving him we would be able to Love or neighbor. It is when the fear and reverence toward God is expressed though us because we love him then and only then you will find yourself automatically losing all selfish ambitions. Imagine a person willing and ready to sow seeds of discord, arguments, or gossip among the saints. The Holy Spirit is saying to you [ STOP]. the fear of God is in you because you love him, you know God will not approve of such actions. Immediately that person hears a voice speaking to them telling them “God will not approve of those things coming out of your mouth”. That still voice you heard within you was the Holy Spirit.
Question: How do you know it’s the Holy Spirit and not me or Satan?
We know it’s not Satan because the devil will not encourage you or remind you to fear God in fact Jesus foreknew, we would have question about this and spoke about Satan’s characteristics in the scriptures
John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
Jesus called the devil a thief. He loves to steal your joy, your peace, your happiness in Christ. Jesus also speaks against all those who choose not to fear God, and we know when the fear of God is not expresses in you automatically you will do the will of the devil you will unconsciously live a lie. Giving Satan access to your body. Did you know this is where sickness comes from?
John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
So we know when you hear that still voice speaking to you encouraging you to fear God asking you would God approve to this? It’s not Satan and it’s not yourself.
Question: How do we know it’s not us that’s speaking even though the voice sounds like our voice speaking in our mind?
Well God also knew we would have this question. So He raised up Apostle Paul and gave him the answer, and this answer is found in the book of Ephesians. Remember the question is

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Remember in past bible studies we explained what Grace was and what Faith was. << See
We know that Grace is the Holy Spirit and Faith is having the confidence to do God’s will. We know that God’s will is for us to fear him. So let us read Ephesians 2:8 in that context.
Ephesians 2:8 For by [The Holy Spirit] are ye saved through [Having the Confidence to fear God] ; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
We are given the confidence to do God’s will, this is called faith. In this case the faith we are expressing it’s to fear him, to reverence him. This can only be done by the Holy Spirit. It is a gift from God and not us. Therefore, it’s clear to see that it’s not us that’s speaking even though the voice sounds like our voice speaking in our mind. It’s the Holy Spirit.
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Jesus said the Holy Ghost will teach us all things and bring to our remembrance, whatsoever Jesus had spoken.
Question: Did Jesus speak about fearing God?
Answer: Yes, he tells us who to fear
Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Jesus said to fear God. Not with a fear of terror but with reverence. Yes! We must fear God is absolute reverence and awe for he is the Almighty God, the Creator of all things and we love him.
Let’s say you begin to argue to fight with your husband or a family member, a co-worker, or even with your wife. Now your armed and ready to say nasty things because Satan has shown you that you can use his ability to destroy them, you are now given a Satanic intellect. “The need to be right”. In the Spirit of your mind, you already see the outcome there is no turning back, your mind is made up, I had enough I am ready to destroy that family member I am ready to destroy that co-worker, that friend even my Husband or my wife I am ready to destroy them using words then actions to cast them down. My need to be right is my need to be right. The Holy Spirit, which is grace, is saying to you [ STOP] Remember I am around you and in you. The fear of God is in you because you love him you know God will not approve of such actions. You have just received Faith the confidence to do God’s will. You were made aware, you were reminded, by the Holy Spirit that you love God, and you must fear him. So, what do you do?. That’s right you listen to the voice of God and Stop? Why? Because you Love Him.
Mark 12:30-31 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
When the fear of God is in us, we will automatically love God with all your heart and Soul and Mind. We will also automatically love our neighbor as ourselves. Why? Because we express the fear towards God every day. Automatically we will be living, and approved life directed by The Holy Spirit. Soon enough you will be living that approved life towards others. This is how we love our neighbor as ourselves.
I want you to say this: God has already given me everything I need to live a Godly life!!

In closing When we walk in love and fear of God, we are resisting the devil and he will flee. When we walk in the fear and love for God, we are encouraging the Holy Spirit to be in us and around us. When we walk in the fear and love for God, we will automatically love our neighbor as ourselves. When we walk in the fear and love for God, we must take notice of that still voice speaking to us in our mind encouraging us to fear God reminding us that we Love Him. This is the beginning to wisdom, the beginning of understanding.
